The right snowshoe for your tours
The range of snowshoes on offer today is overwhelming. Bergfritz will be happy to advise you on the right choice of snowshoe to help you make the right decision:
Shape and size
The main aim of the snowshoe on your tour should be to prevent you from sinking into deep snow. The total weight (body weight & rucksack) plays a central role in choosing the right snowshoes.
- Women: approx. 56 cm / 22''
- Men: approx. 64 cm / 25''
For rough, untracked terrain, we recommend using a larger model or attaching a snowshoe extension. The larger the support, the greater the lift.
The different terrains and the right snowshoe
The steeper the terrain, the more important the following snowshoe attributes are:
Flat terrain
- Simple binding
- Light and compact construction of the snowshoe
- Pins on the underside
Large contact surface ensures optimum buoyancy.
Pre-alpine terrain
- Traction rails on two sides of the snowshoes
- Climbing aid
Alpine terrain
- Firm and compact hold thanks to the binding
- Climbing aid
In alpine terrain, fold up the climbing aid to make the ascent easier. We also recommend a more complex binding that can be fixed more firmly to withstand higher loads. For better grip and more traction in steep terrain, a larger number of spikes/spikes on the frame, additional gripping points and pronounced crampons help
General tip:
Lighter snowshoe models offer more comfort when walking, which is very noticeable on longer tours.
